How the July Tax Deadlines Affect Small Businesses (And What You Should Do Now)

As the summer holidays approach, it’s easy for tax deadlines to slip off your radar – but July is a key month for small businesses in the UK. From employee benefits to personal tax payments, there are a couple of dates that deserve your attention. Here’s a quick guide to what’s due, who it applies to, and how to get everything sorted in time.

1. P11D and P11D(b) Forms – Deadline: 6 July

If you’ve provided any benefits to employees – like company cars, private healthcare, or even reimbursed expenses – you’ll likely need to submit a P11D form for each employee.

Alongside this, you may also need to file a P11D(b) form to report the total Class 1A National Insurance owed on these benefits.

What you need to do:

  • Identify any benefits or expenses provided in the last tax year (2024/25).
  • Complete and file your P11Ds and P11D(b) with HMRC by 6 July 2025.
  • Pay the Class 1A NIC by 22 July 2025 (or 19 July if paying by post).

2. Second Payment on Account – Deadline: 31 July

If you're self-employed or receive income outside of PAYE, you may need to make a second payment on account towards your 2024/25 tax bill.

What you need to do:

  • Check your HMRC account or ask your accountant what your second payment on account should be.
  • Pay the amount due by 31 July 2025 to avoid interest charges.

3. Bonus Tip: Start Planning for January

It might feel far off, but this is a great time to start pulling together your paperwork for your 2024/25 Self Assessment return. Getting organised now means no scrambling after Christmas – and no nasty surprises!
